Fernando de Jesus Oliveira is the Brazilian artist known simply as “Ferjo.” His paintings offer a world of irrational occurrences where gravity is defied—objects float above the floor, walls disappear, and the traditional laws of perspective are skewed. Ferjo has mastered the techniques of Realism in order to deliver traditional Surrealist themes.

In his college years at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, Ferjo received numerous accolades for his virtuosity in painting, including the New York Council for the Arts Award of Excellence, and the prestigious Crescent Scholarship. Upon graduation in 1979, Ferjo began perfecting his technique as a Realist painter.

Initially inspired by the classical masters of art, Ferjo often incorporated artists like Leonardo into his own paintings. It isn’t uncommon to spot a well-known work of art hanging on the walls of one of Ferjo’s hallucinogenic interiors.

A clear comparison can be drawn between Ferjo’s art and the art of world renowned Surrealist painters Salvador Dalí, Giorgio de Chirico, and Yves Tanguy. However, it is Ferjo’s art-historical references that differentiate his work from the others. His ability to operate in multiple artistic movements at once creates a visual harmony that showcases Ferjo’s versatility and expertise as a unique Surrealist master.
